Love, Joy, Peace...
Our History
Beginning in 1900 Sunday School was held during the summer months in Odoms school house. From 1914 until April 1, 1917, Sunday School and prayer services were held regularly each Sunday. April 1, 1917, Corinth Baptist Church was founded as a part of the Roanoke Association by Rev. D.T. Bynam of Franklin County with seventeen fellow members. They were A.J. Coggin, R.R. Coggin, N.W. Coggin, Miss Belle Coggin, H.K. Coggin, A.S. Griffin, Mrs. A.S. Griffin, Mrs. Sallie Vick, J.T. Vick, J.W. Vick, Mrs. J.W. Vick, Mrs. Fannie Vick, P.R. Batchelor, Mrs. P.R. Batchelor, Miss Annie Batchelor, Jim Batchelor, and W.J. Coggin. One half acre of land was bought from Patsy Battle for forty dollars on which a house of worship was to be built. One non-member paid five dollars of this amount. A building committee was appointed.
In September, 1917, the first revival was held and conducted by the Pastor, with assistance from his son, Rev. John H. Bunn. There were fifteen people added to the Corinth Baptist Church membership by baptism that night. In October, P.R. Batchelor, W.A. May, and J.A. Perry were elected as delegates to represent Corinth Baptist Church in Williamston, NC, to present the church to the Roanoke Association. They were accepted into the Association.
In November of 1917, the "Articles of Faith" were read and adopted. The first Sunday of June 1918 the building committee made a report on the plans for the new church building along with the cost. Work began immediately to erect a house of worship for $2.600. However, the building needed to be furnished. With the additional costs of pews, pulpit furniture, and chairs for two Sunday School classrooms, the total cost was $4,000. The first service was held in the new church on the first Sunday morning of January 1920. The church building was dedicated to God's glory on June 5, 1920.
Since before 1939, the church has observed Homecoming Day on the third Sunday of October. In the fall of 1947, a church parsonage was begun, and it was completed in 1948. In 1955, remodeling of the church took place. Additional church property was purchased in 1962. In 1968 plans were made to install a baptistry and a central heating and air conditioning system.
In 1978 a building committee was appointed to begin planning for a new church building. A fund was established to help build the new church. Plans were presented in December 1979 and approved. The project was named "Together We Build". Bonds were sold and over $99,000 was pledged during this campaign. In 1983 the new construction began. The first service was held in the church building on June 22, 1984, with the dedication of the building being on Homecoming Day, Sunday, October 21, 1984. In 1985 more improvements were made as a sound system was added, and a new parking lot was completed. A new brick church sign was also erected. In 1987 the church steeple was donated and added to the church building.
History was again made on April 27, 1997, when a life-long member of the church, Rev. Michael W. Coggin, was ordained as Pastor of the church and served God faithfully until his retirement on December 27, 2020.
